Sealaska Corporation incorporated as a for-profit regional corporation pursuant to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 (ANCSA), with its headquarters in Juneau.  Sealaska is the Alaska Native regional corporation for Southeast Alaska, with an initial enrollment of over 15,000 Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian tribal members as its shareholders.  Initial work included setting up its administrative and governing bodies, developing policies, selecting land holdings, and investment planning from the act’s land and monetary awards.

Juneau Community College building destroyed by fire, Southeast Alaska Empire, 2-24-1972, p. 1

Juneau-Douglas Community College on Fifth Street was destroyed by fire February 22. University of Alaska, Southeast was created, merging the larger communities in SE Alaska with the Juneau SE Senior College at Auke Lake.

Following a record snowfall, an avalanche off Mt. Juneau into the Last Chance Basin knocked out the city’s water supply for five days. The event briefly covered most of Juneau in a cloud of snow and was captured on film by Skip Gray.

Western Airlines pulled its operations out of Juneau, due to a ruling by the federal CAB.
