Membership

In September, 2020, the Gastineau Channel Historical Society Board approved a new dues structure (the first adjustment in more than a decade). Expanded levels of membership support a new website and pay portal, as well as the Society’s ability to contribute to history preservation. The revised dues also allow the Society to recognize our exceptional contributors. New dues will appear on the renewal notice members will receive.

GCHS recognizes those whose extra level of commitment enables the Society to serve its membership better and to respond to unique opportunities such as contributing as a charter member of Friends of the Juneau-Douglas Museum and contributing to purchase of historic photograph albums, purchase of the Sydney Laurence paintings, “Early Morning, Juneau, Alaska,” and “Bend in the River” for the Friends of the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. The Society also supported “The Empty Chair” project to recognize the internment of SE Alaskan Japanese-Americans during WW II. GCHS contributed $5,000 to each. GCHS also contributed $2,000 to restoration of the Treadwell Salt Water Pump House; $2,500 to the William Seward statue; $2,000 (half from the Last Chance Mining Museum) to the Treadwell Society for stabilization of the New Treadwell Office Building. In 2017, GCHS donated $650 to Juneau-based panels recognizing Alaska’s Sesquicentennial and, in 2019, $1,900 to print “Tales of a Territorial Childhood.”  Currently the society has reprinted two popular local history books: Redman’s The Juneau Gold Belt and DeArmond’s Old Gold, and is in process of reprinting Stone & Stone’s Hard Rock Gold. It is currently planning repairs and upgrades to the Sentinel Island lighthouse. Thanks to your patronage, GCHS has been able to develop our new website:  juneauhistory.org.
