Anita Garnick, a Juneau grocery store owner, was the second Juneau woman elected to the Alaska Territorial House of Representatives, serving in the 1947-1948 term.

The first annual Golden North Salmon Derby was held on two Sundays, August 31 and September 7, by the Territorial Sportsmen’s Association, to raise money for conservation studies scholarships. Dick Harris turned in the winning fish, a 40 lb. king salmon, and won a fishing rod and new Plymouth sedan.

The Juneau halibut fleet this year was larger than ever before and numbered about 35 vessels, according to the Fishing Vessel Owners Association April 14. Largest vessel of the local fleet was still the 10-man schooner Explorer.

The Corps of Engineers dock, formerly known as the Subport dock, the Government dock, and by many other titles, was now operating 13 tugs and 40 barges out of Juneau. The Resident Engineer reported that the Engineers had purchased and transported more than 260 million board feet of lumber from Southeastern Alaska to various Alaska and South Pacific bases. The Corps of Engineers employed about 250 men in Juneau. The Northern Commercial Company opened its newly constructed Juneau Marine Base July 12, located just north of the small boat harbor. The base included a marine railway capable of hauling out boats to 115 feet in length.

On August 23 the HMS Kenya, a British warship carrying 618 officers and men visited Juneau. The submarine tender, U. S. S. Nereus, and four U. S. Navy submarines were also in the harbor at that time.

The City of Douglas took over operation of the Douglas government school from the Alaska Native Service August 2 (the present Juneau Montessori school formerly the Mayflower School building).
