Roaring down Mr. Roberts to South Franklin St. on January 2, Juneau’s most disastrous slide to date killed three people, injured many, and destroyed six buildings and damaged others. Large ice movement from the Taku Glacier mid- March extended out into Stephens Passage greatly restricting navigation for a while.

In early February police recovered a 500 lb. safe stolen from the America Cigar Store  on Lower Front Street by following sled tracks from the store to the thieves’ cabin on Willoughby Avenue.  The two culprits were arrested and $200 reclaimed from the unopened safe.

The first airplanes to be seen in this part of Alaska winged over Juneau August 16 (without landing) and dropped a package to Governor Riggs. They were part of the U. S. Army’s Black Wolf Squadron which left New York to fly to Nome and return.

The Alaska Historical Association formed and opened the Alaska Territorial Museum to the public August 9 at the Arctic Brotherhood Building on Third Street. Museum items that were stored in the governor’s office here, at Sitka and in Washington D. C., were received and arranged in the museum.

October 13 Miss Josephine Scott of Hydaburg was the first nurse to graduate from a training course in Alaska , having recently completed the three-year course in the United States Native Hospital in Juneau.

The Alaska Daily Capital newspaper was established March 5, but was short-lived, changing its name and format several times before finally ceasing publication July 29, 1923 as the Juneau Sunday Weekly.

The AJ mine began dumping its waste rock into the channel by the end of South Franklin Street, eventually forming a good breakwater to provide increased harbor protection and later commercial land.  Down at the city dock in mid-February, 150 tons of coal crashed through the decking while it was unloaded from a freighter, but cracking timbers warned workers and no injuries resulted.
