Outer Drive was completed, a four-lane expressway from downtown Juneau to the airport area.  The CBJ Assembly passed a resolution February 6 to re-name it to Egan Drive to honor former governor William “Bill” Egan for his contributions to the development and progress of the state. A burst water main December 18 caused a major flooding down Seward Street to create a temporary pond downtown on Front Street. Temporary repairs were made and water service restored to affected areas, but full repair would have to wait until next spring.

Direct Distance Dialing was installed in Juneau.

The first annual Alaska Folk Festival, a one-night concert of local musicians who performed on a small stage in the Alaska State Museum was started in April. (The festival is now a week-long extravaganza of free evening and weekend concerts featuring performers every 15 minutes).

Highest temperature recorded to date was 90 degrees in July.
