1914 – Juneau Camp No. 4, Alaska Native Brotherhood, was organized in the school house of Auk Village in Juneau last night. There were 30 present but it was found that only 11 of them were eligible for membership under the qualifications set forth by the parent organization.              Gastineau Bygones – 07/07/1978

1930 – The three-story frame messhouse and store building at the old John L. Carlson cannery at Auke Bay was destroyed by fire which started about one o’clock this morning.  A high wind was blowing from Mendenhall Glacier at the time and watchman William Lee was unable to save even his personal effects.  He and volunteers did manage to save the cannery building, although it caught fire several times.  The gasboat Pacific was also saved. Captain Clarence Ceddes, who was in charge of the property, estimated the loss at $12,000.  The cannery was built in 1919 by J.L. Carlson & Co., operated through the 1921 season, but has not operated since.  Down through the Years Winter 1978

1937– The Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Company has announced a pay increase for 869 of its employees which will total $85,000 a year. The average daily wage will increase from $6.15 to $6.45. Since 1915 the company has paid out $20,645,439.95 in wages. In that first year it had 301 employees at an average of $3.52 a day. The company paid out more than $12 million in wages before 1931 which was the first year in which dividends were paid to stockholders. Gastineau Bygones – 07/27/1979

1942 –The February tire allotment for Alaska has been announced by the Office of Price Administration. Juneau will receive two passenger tires, two passenger car tubes, five truck tires and nine truck tubes. Douglas will receive one each passenger car tire and tube, one truck tire and one truck tube.               Gastineau Bygones – 03/07/1980

1964 – The inauguration of the newly-formed Alaska National Guard 910th Engineer Company in Juneau was announced today by 1st Lt. Roger E. Henderson, commanding officer. Tomorrow’s ceremony at the armory will feature an address by Gov. William A. Egan, commander-in-chief of the Alaska National Guard. The company will provide many new opportunities for young men and veterans in the Juneau-Douglas area, including heavy equipment operation and construction experience. 1969 – The arguments that have raged in the Alaska House this week have reached the point Tuesday where members did not even give consent to spreading the opening prayer in the day’s journal. Rep.Earl D. Hillstand, D-Anchorage, objected to putting the prayer offered by the Rev. Thomas Dahl, a local Methodist minister, into the journal. Rep.
