1913 – Salmon Creek power station opens to generate power for the Perseverance mine. Juneau 1980 Centennial Calendar

1942 – Alaska’s first air raid shelter, constructed in the back yard of the Dr. W. M. Whitehead home on Sixth Street, is pictured in the current issue of Life Magazine. The shelter was designed for Dr. Whitehead by Harold Foss from plan which originated with the British Air Ministry.        Gastineau Bygones – 02/08/1980

1954 – The first shipment of emergency food was distributed today at the Douglas city dock, one of several shipments to help relieve a poor fishing season for local residents.  Earlier the city council estimated that up to 20 families were affected. Daily Alaska Empire01/15, 26/1954

1959 – The first Alaska State Legislature was convened at Juneau today by acting-Governor Hugh J. Wade in his office of Secretary of State. Wade filled in for Governor William “Bill” Egan, who is recovering from surgery in Seattle.  Wade opened the session with a mammoth ivory gavel, the same one used to open the first territorial legislature in 1913 and every one since.  The legislature will be tasked to form the new state government and court system by providing the requisite laws to do so.
