1905 – The 300-stamp mill of the Treadwell Company closed down several days ago after having operated on water power since last April. When operating, the mill treats five tons of rock per stamp, o 1500 tons a day. Work is going forward on the Treadwell main shaft which is now down 1000 feet and ore values are increasing with depth.      Gastineau Bygones – 11/21/1980

1946 – Nineteen families were left homeless and stripped of their personal possessions in the Sunday afternoon fire which destroyed the Coliseum Theater and Apartments on South Franklin Street. Total loss is estimated at $200,000 but only a mixture of rain and snow plus an almost total absence of wind saved the Alaska Laundry and other adjoining buildings. The fire originated in the furnace room at 12:20 yesterday afternoon. The building started life as Jaxson’s Roller Rink and was later purchased by W. D. Gross who converted it to a movie house and made several additions to the building. At the end it had a seating capacity of about 1000. The apartments were added in 1932. The theater once held the first pipe organ in an Alaska movie house but the organ was moved to Mr. Gross’ new Twentieth Century Theater after it was built.  Gastineau Bygones – 10/03/1980

1952 – Winds in excess of 100 miles a hour tore the Douglas crab cannery building off its pilings and hurled it into the channel.  The building owned by the City of Douglas and leased by Olympic Seafood Company was closed for the season, but the company was planning to go into the shrimp processing business in the spring.  Insurance only covered about half of the $65,000 value of the four year old building.  The city later leased the municipal natatorium building to the company and the operation was able to continue as planned.   Daily Alaska Empire – January 21, 23; March 5, 1952

1968 – The new Teenage Center opened today after a lengthy fund-raising campaign started in 1952 by a $25,000 initial gift from impressed Pennsylvania visitors.  The club was started in 1946 by Zach Gordon, after he’d completed his wartime tour of duty here with the United Service Organization. Now in his 22nd year as club director, Gordon has assisted the young people of Juneau in their activities and extended a vibrant hospitality to visitors from throughout the country and many foreign countries as well. The new building provides expanded recreation, lounge, and kitchen areas for its participants. Juneau Alaska Empire – January 21, 1968
