1921 – The Rev. Charles E. Rice, who with his family arrived here yesterday to take charge of Holy Trinity Cathedral, is an old time Alaskan. He went to Skagway shortly after the Klondike excitement, then when gold was discovered in the Tanana district he went to the new town of Fairbanks and was the first minister to hold services there. From Fairbanks he went to Fort Yukon, then to Seward. Eleven years ago the family moved to Washington State and then to Colorado, from where he returns to Alaska.            Gastineau Bygones – 09/14/1979

1956 – Despite gusty Taku winds, the Douglas Island Women’s Club members worked this last weekend to complete the physical phase of their community house-numbering project. Assistance was also provided by the volunteer fire department, the Douglas Lions Club, and The Fraternal Order of Eagles. 1961 – Monty Atwater, a Forest Service national avalanche control and safety expert, reported yesterday that the Juneau area has several areas that could be developed into top recreational areas, particularly for skiing.  His top recommendation was the Steep Creek upper basin which has great snow and  no peer scenically in North America.  A gondola lift would provide year around access for both winter and summer recreation.  Atwater spent the last week at the invitation of the local Forest Service office to tour the area and develop recommendations for recreational development. 1979 – The motion picture “Bear Island” starring Lloyd Bridges and Barbara Parkins was being filmed in Glacier Bay. “Today in Alaskan History…”

1969 –  A new sauna spa has just opened in Juneau that has a complete line of relaxation and therapy options and features the latest in sauna equipment. The Finlandia Sauna Palor, operated by Ed Berkey and Laura Copstad, is located in the Miner Publishing Co. building and has six private sauna rooms, where exact temperatures can be regulated, and three rooms are set up with massage tables with competent, friendly masseuses available for massage work. “We’ve gone to a lot of work and expense to make our place the nicest sauna parlor north of San Francisco, said Berkey.
