1914 – Through the efforts of William Britt, president of the local lodge, a reading room for members of the Sons of Norway has been opened in the Casebolt Building on Front Street. Because of the great increase in the halibut fleet fishing out of Juneau, many of those crew members belong to the Sons of Norway, there has been a demand for such a facility.                Gastineau Bygones – 07/21/1978

1923 – The heavy snowfall of the past several days is driving the timber wolves out of the mountains and a large pack is now in the Sheep Creek Basin back of Thane according to John Dolan who has been working on his claim in the basin.           Gastineau Bygones – 09/26/1980

1955 – Douglas City Council reviewed the first reading of a proposed ordinance to ban sex, horror, and violent comic books, based on a similar court-tested New Orleans law.  Council men reported that they’d received complaints from the community that “juveniles had ‘used the pattern’ of comic books in the execution of violent pranks and near-serious crimes”. One councilman declared that “whole problem of comic books and juvenile delinquency had reached the point where somebody had to make a move”. Daily Alaska Empire – 01/12/1955

1979  – Bagpipes serenaded Gov. Jay and Bella Hammond as they entered each of three inaugural balls for a “festive starlight of dancing in Juneau” honoring Hammond’s second term of office.“Today in Alaskan History…” 1990
